SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES


Manuscript Format Requirements

If you are intended to submit an article for publication in Down Syndrome Research and Practice, you should read these requirements carefully. You should also review the journal's aims and scope.

Postal submissions

Please send four copies of your manuscript, which should be typewritten and double-spaced on 'A4' or 'Letter' paper, with any tables or illustrations. With the copies of you manuscript, please submit your article on either a 3-inch floppy disc in PC format or a 'Zip' (Iomega) disk (PC Format) as explained in "Electronic Storage Formats", below.

Electronic mail submissions

Please send  your manuscript to dsr&p-submissions@downsnet.org as explained in "Electronic Storage Formats", below. E-mail attachments should be 'MIME' encoded and should preferably not be encrypted. (If encryption is felt to be important, then PGP encryption is acceptable).

Electronic Storage Formats

Word processors’ file formats that can be supported are as follows. However, as a precaution, please always submit a copy of the text in Plain Text (ASCII) format as well as your preferred word processor format.

  • Microsoft Word for Windows 97 (version 8.x [or SR-1])
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95 (version 7.x)
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 6.x
  • Microsoft Word for Macintosh 5.x
  • Microsoft Word for Macintosh 4.x
  • Corel WordPerfect 6.x
  • Corel WordPerfect 5.x
  • Microsoft Works for Windows 4.x
  • Microsoft Works for Windows 5.x
  • Rich Text Format (RTF)
  • ASCII text

Tables and graphs may be submitted in the following spreadsheet packages’ file formats:

  • Excel 97
  • Excel 95
  • Excel 6.0
  • Lotus 1-2-3
  • Quattro Pro

Graphs and diagrams that are submitted as ‘graphics’ file formats should be saved as:

  • Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)
  • Portable Network Graphics (PNG)
  • Corel PhotoPaint (CPT)
  • TIFF Bitmap (TIFF)
  • Adobe PhotoShop (PSD)
  • Windows Bitmap Format (BMP)
  • JPEG (JPG/JPEG) [Though the compression algorithms sued for JPEG's will result in a loss of definition, and is really only suitable for photographs]

Manuscript Layout Requirements

TITLE
The suggested title should appear on the first page of the manuscript.

AUTHORS
The name(s), title(s) and affiliations of the author(s) should appear on the second page. (Where there is more than one author, indicate who should receive correspondence.)

ABSTRACT

Articles should be preceded by an abstract or summary of up to 300 words. All papers should be in English and spellings should be English rather than American.

KEYWORDS

Key words or phrases should be provided that accurately identify key concepts or subjects discussed within the paper. These should preferably not exceed 12 and should be separated with commas.

SHORT TITLE

An abbreviated title should be provided for the purpose of page headings within the printed publication.

HEADINGS AND SUB-HEADINGS

Sub-headings are encouraged, and should be typed in bold, but not capitalised. If sub-headings are of different sizes, please indicate clearly.

PARAGRAPHS

Please do not indent paragraphs. One space should be left after a full-stop. In general, please use minimal textual formatting, only where it adds meaning through emphasis. Quotations of about 20 words or more should be placed on a new line.

TERMINOLOGY

As this is an international and an inter-disciplinary journal the needs of readers from different backgrounds should be born in mind. Technical or other terms specific to a particular discipline should be explained in a glossary at the end of the article. Abbreviations should generally be avoided, except when they improve the readability of the text. In particular, the use of abbreviations to refer to groups of people should be avoided (e.g. MR/DS). Any abbreviations used should be detailed at the start of the article.

Authors should avoid the use of potentially devaluing terminology for people with a learning disability. The terms ‘children with a developmental disability’ or ‘with moderate/severe learning difficulties’ are acceptable. The terms ‘mental handicap’ and ‘mental subnormality’ are not. The term ‘Down syndrome’ should be written in full, and ‘syndrome’ spelt with a small ‘s’ except when in a title. Please refer to ‘children with Down’s syndrome’ rather than ‘Down’s syndrome children’.

REFERENCES

Bibliographical references within the text should be made by citing the surnames of up to two authors and the date of publication, for example (Hodgkinson, 1990), (Dent and Stephenson, 1979) or (Loftus et al., 1989). The letters a, b, c, etc. should be added, after the year, to distinguish references to books or articles by the same author(s) in the same year. References to legislation should be made in the text, for example (Mental Health Act 1983, s.1). Where a quotation is used, or the text refers to a specific part of a book, article, or similar, then the reference in the text should include the relevant page number.

A full list of bibliographical references, cited in the text, should appear at the end of the paper. The list should be in alphabetical order by authors’ surnames.

Entries should adopt the conventions described in the APA style guidelines as contained in The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 4th ed., 1994 (Subject Reference: 808.02 AME). Some examples follow:
